Shoreline Black Rocks & Cornish Open | Kayak Surfing

This year I'm training for the surf kayak worlds in Bude, held from September 29th to October 9th. I've been preparing for the event with regular trips from Plymouth up to Bude to get familiar with the site and waves, flat water sessions to build up my base fitness and cross training to round out the week. The first real test for this has been at the two recent events the Shoreline Black Rock contest, and the Cornish open. These events also double as qualification events for the English team, who will be competing in the team event at worlds in a team event that runs alongside the normal individual events.

The first event was the Black Rock contest, with a big turn out despite a pessimistic forecast. I travelled up a day early to make the most of some long period ground swell and offshore winds. I managed to fit in a great session at Widemouth bay, the comp site for the weekend, and a second at crooklets, the main site for the world's.Rocking up on Saturday morning brought small, but perfectly contestable conditions. The two day event was squeezed into one, leading to a jam packed day, with tight turn around between heats and very little down time to recover. I had a great day at the event, moving through the rounds to make finals in both short boat and long boat. After fighting hard all day, I came away with a win in the short boat and 3rd in the long boat. The day was then rounded out with fish and chips while watching the sunset.

A few weeks later and I'm heading to Godrevy for the Cornish open. Another good list of entrants and a promising, but still relatively small forecast brought a great day. Another busy day of heats and I made both of the finals again, this time coming away with a win in short boat and long boat. The winters training seems to be paying off. From now there's two more weeks to the third and final team qualification event, this time held in Saunton, North Devon on the 11th of June. I can't wait to see how the event goes and hope my form continues on to October!
